SHAKER SOCIETY
The Shakers were a religious sect that believed they should
exist in their own private world. They believed in celibacy and
the perfection of life on earth. Mother Ann Lees founded the
Shakers in the early 1800's. She was responsible for settlements
in Ohio, Kentucky & New England. All of the items that the
Shakers made had a functional use. They were inventors, craftsmen
and agriculturists.
There is only one Shaker Settlement in active existence. It is
located at Sabbathday Lake in Maine.
